The Silver Needle
Old but still great cross stitch!
Over the 24 years The Silver Needle has been in business, we've enjoyed so many neat, timeless designs! Some cross-stitch patterns and kits have a 'shelf-life' of a season or two... but every once in a while, something so wonderful comes along that it becomes a instant favorite for years to come! We've decided to do our "Oldies But Goodies" page because we wanted to show you some of those that really couldn't go on our "Just Arrived" Page -- for obvious reasons! Hope you enjoy seeing all of these... I'll try to remember to tell you when each was originally released, maybe you'll recognize a finished project or two!

By Charlette's Collectables, here are two leaflets that deliver silly sayings about what else... Marriage and Memory!

They need no words... maybe you'll find something fun to stitch between the 6 designs that are offered as charts in the pair of two leaflets. Regular DMC flosses, your choice of fabrics!

The Boy Scout Book! -- click to see a larger viewThe Boy Scout Book!
Originally published in 1986... this book is officially authorized by The Boy Scouts of America... and contains Emblems and Badges, borders and alphabets. 28 Pages of The Universal (with or without pins) and Cub Scout Emblems, and all sorts of badges (I'm a Girl Scout -- so I don't know what all of these are!!) I can, however, tell that this is a great collection of charts for the Boy Scout in your life! I remember selling this book in the shop in the late 80's... but then it disappeared from the marketplace. It was a nice surprise to see it re-surface! So... pick up your copy before it vanishes again!

The Gatherers
from Shepherd's Bush
During the 1990s, Bush designed a series of 4 Gatherers. Four colorful, detailed pieces... they seemed to be giant extensions of the smaller designs they were also publishing. Sort of the 'corner-stones' if you will. Exquisite dress, borders, and companion sheep and gardens... each is prettier than the last! Herb Gatherer came first... a mauve/lavender summer garden piece. Next was Wool Gatherer... a companion in blue, teal, and taupe colors. He carries a pack full of real wool roving on his back! Now, I don't remember my history well, because I THINK Toy came next. The Christmas version... Toy Gatherer is full of rich burgundys and deep greens. Finally, we were treated to The Earthgatherers. A springtime, pastoral scene... like all the rest, it features the backstitched background of light taupe, suggesting the setting for its Gatherer.

All offered as complete kits of linen and silks, each has multiple embellishments and lots of SB charm! Herb Gatherer (1990) measures approx 13 x 13, mat is arched, hand-carved and huge! Wool Gatherer (1991) measures the same size, same awesome triple, hand-carved mat treatment, only blues instead of mauves. Toy (1992) measures approx 10 x 8. Triple, handcarved and arched mat features hand-painting as well, and is also huge! Earthgatherers (1996) measures approx 12 x 18, and its mat features 4 layers, hand-carving and hand-painting! Stunning!

Be You Thankful Band Sampler
from Homespun Elegance
Another re-release by Homespun Elegance, this first appeared in 1991! Offered in a leaflet, it's a long band sampler stitched in brown, brick, teal and green DMCs. (These were designed before all the overdyed threads came into being!) Lots of smaller designs taken from the large version... this had been so requested, that Homespun Elegance has re-printed it!

Glass Paper Weights
Solid glass paperweights, these have been around for years... and we still sell them! Four different shapes, each comes with a cork backing to protect the table. We've seen just everything from 40ct silk gauze samplers in these to quick initials stitched on 10ct... just anything will do well. The rectangular one is approx 3 x 4-1/2, and the others, generally 3 x 3-ish. Each is an inch thick, and I think weigh at least a pound! Great gifts for men, students, secretaries, just anybody!

O'Tannenbaum
designed by Heart's Content

This has been a customer favorite of ours for years and years! A beautiful deep green Christmas tree stitched over one thread on 36ct linen, the arched wooden frame is included in the kit! The design is very intricate, full of sparkly metallic ornaments of reds, purples, blues and golds and lots of tiny details. It finishes just a little under 3 x 4," and the hand-rubbed walnut frame measures 4 x 5." Complete kit includes the fabric, cotton and metallic flosses, 36ct linen, and the frame.

A Frosty Feast
By Crossed Wing Collection
Crossed Wing Frosty Feast -- click to see a larger viewThis has been a customer favorite for years and years! Available as a chart pack, it's a delightful design of four snowmen all dressed in hats, scarves and mittens, surrounded by tiny birds. Crossed Wing is known for their lovely bird designs, so included in the pattern are enlarged charts of all the tiny birds, so they're easier to stitch. Our 6 x 19" model is stitched on Confederate Grey 28ct, and is just charming! Stitch each snow-person individually if you'd like... there's even a little dog picking up stray mittens!

The Plantation Sampler
By Canterbury Designs
A stunning sampler, this has stood the test of time for us! Originally published in 1987... our deep green suede matted model is still an eye-catcher in the shop! Stitched on any Natural or Flax colored Linen, it measures approx a whopping 19 inches square on 28ct! Elegant greens, golds, browns, and rosey-salmons... it has a charming border, neat house on the hill, lots of animals in the yard, and the traditional alphabet. Beautiful, this is available as a leaflet, (you can tell its age by the leaflet price!!!)

The Nostalgia Collection
By Heritage Stitchcraft
Here are three antique advertisements of famous ships and landmarks that are dear to our hearts! Incredibly well done charts, these stitch to measure approx 8 x 13" on a 28ct. Each chart has a separate chart for the backstitching and details, so they're actually very easy to follow. All charted for DMC flosses, each is a reproduction from the original artwork. What wonderful souvenirs of recent travels! Available as separate chart packs.

America the Beautiful
By Sue Hillis Designs
We've seen an increased demand for this old-favorite design recently! Originally published in 1985, it's a map of the United states, complete with little pictures that depict each state's famous crops or industry. It measures a whopping 17 x 29" on 14/28 ct.. quite a statement for a wall! It was designed before the days of beads, buttons and charm embellishments... but there are lots of places that sort of thing would be fun on this. Enjoy!

The Graduate
By Sue Hillis Designs
Full of rich navy, cinnamon, and golds, this is a stunning graduation remembrance -- very classy! Stitched on 28ct, it finishes approx 7 x 8," with an alphabet, with spaces provided for personalization. Included are two antiqued brass charms: a key that sits on top of the books, and a lamp-of-learning to place beside the graduate's name. Available as a leaflet with the charms.

Wedding Day
By Sue Hillis Designs
A simple wedding day remembrance, this is stitched on Natural Linen in the picture, but can be worked on almost any fabric you choose -- maybe something to match the wedding colors? Soft greens and cremes, there are three charms included, a double heart and two wedding bells, that attach to the design. It's been a popular choice for our customers for a number of years, because it looks so nice, yet is easy to stitch and finish in time for the big event!
